It is a coincidence that last night my friend and I were talking about how Karan Johar was one of the first few influential people to have introduced gay culture through mainstream Hindi cinema. It had been there in the history, manuscripts, art, folktales, but with time, the stigma grew and nature took a backseat.

A lot of filmmakers followed the path using humor, satire, mockery and this isn’t about the right and wrong. It was about awareness, the first step to normalizing something, eventually leading to the hope of acceptance and celebration. Something which seemed absurd and unimaginable few years back, is being celebrated as the most revered reality today.

6/9 will be marked as the day of love, pride, acceptance and freedom in the history of India.
