There are movies that come out with fancy trailers, use their best and sometimes only good scenes in there, and while you go to watch them, they are nothing but a damp squib. And here’s Kapoor & Sons, whose first trailer was quite average, and the first day reviews surely came as a surprise.
Is there actually something called as a perfect family? A perfect son? A perfect couple? Probably based on our limited observations, we say it at the drop of a hat ‘They are such a perfect couple, he is a perfect son, she is a perfect daughter” But if something is perfect, what’s the fun in loving them? And that is what Kapoor & Sons bring to the table, a group of imperfect people who are striving to be perfect at who they are, and yet, each one of them walks around with some secret quietly lying in an unsettled corner of their hearts.
The most beautiful thing about the movie is ‘Coonoor’ where the Kapoors, who for a change are not stinking rich, live and it’s refreshing to move from flamboyant bungalows to a small house in a hill station. Then enters this dysfunctional family of Dadu (Rishi Kapoor) where everyone fights with everyone, throws stuff at each other in rage, one brother struggles to gain respect in his parents’ eyes, and other is too good to be true.
Alia Bhatt is cute in her bubbly avatar and nails it in the one heart-rending scene given to her while Sidharth could not be ‘good enough’ in his. But what’s extremely relatable is their chemistry and connection, which smoothly grows on you and leaves behind the cliché cases of love at first sight.
The one person who I just could not take my eyes off in this family drama is Fawad Khan. Not just because he is charming and attractive even without his beard, but because he deserves applause for pulling off such a mature role and sometimes, by just letting his eyes talk for him.
Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak are smooth like the red wine while Rishi Kapoor is cocky and adorable.
Music is average except ‘Kar gayi Chul’ but with all songs used in the background of a moving story, it comes across as soothing. Superb story telling, fine actors and well-paced direction surprisingly coming from Shakun Batra who also directed ‘Ek Main aur Ekk Tu’, makes this Dharma production’s movie a definite watch and if possible, watch it with your family and love it even more 🙂
