And just before we were going to ask Imtiaz Ali – Why always the same story ? He began to surprise us with a rush of multiple flashbacks, a child artist who actually looks like little Ranbir, a sudden entry of Deepika, and there begins an intriguing tale of storytelling done impeccably by Imtiaz Ali.
The first half of the movie is a proper entertaining khichdi of all his previous movies put together. Geet misses her train while Tara (Deepika) loses her passport in Corsica and guess who comes to rescue ? Saada Ranbir (Ved) ! But wait a minute! Unlike any other movie/story, they don’t expose their names but expose their wild and carefree sides of personalities to each other and share a great time and sizzling chemistry giving you a déjà vu of Rockstar & Love Aajkal, but obviously better as this is the gorgeous Deepika and charming Ranbir 😉
Like all good things come to an end, so does their exotic trip. So after all the matargasti, they part ways. And unlike they promised, they do cross the line in the pretext of ‘Phir kabhi nahi milenge’. Time passes and Mona darling can’t stop thinking about Don ! So finally, she finds him in Delhi and they meet again. They start dating and apparently everything is perfect until Deepika realises that Ved isn’t the Don who she met in Corsica and fell in love with.
From here on, the movie shifts its focus from the love struck Deepika to the conflicted Ranbir who is shown to have a borderline split personality case and there begins the journey of his realisation, acceptance and self exploration when he finds someone who refuses to give up on him and compels him to stop running in the rat race and just embrace his real self.
If you have seen all the Imtiaz Ali movies, you will find his signature glimpses like the boy-meets-girl in an unconventional setup and they fall in love, the scene when Deepika meets him after 4 years and pulls off the flawed and confused girl she reminds you of Meera from Love Aajkal, the pained Ranbir reminds of JJ in Rockstar, but what makes this movie so beautiful is the clear message that it brings along – Follow your dreams and no matter how crazy they are, be with someone who loves them as much and never give up on you !
The second half majorly belongs to Ranbir as he is excruciatingly powerful in expressing his pain and frustration, and yet done with a kick of humor and while Deepika becomes the reason for his resurrection, it made less sense for her to vanish from the movie for about 30 min and only come back for the climax !
However, the movie is intense, touches a sensitive topic and presents it gracefully. The music isn’t as good as it could be with A.R. Rahman, although Matargasti by Mohit Chauhan offers a typical carefree feel and Heer toh Badi Sad Hai by Mika is quirky and cute, what’s surely a heart stealer for Tamasha is Agar Tum Saath Ho sung by Arijit Singh and the melody queen Alka Yagnik after a long long time.
It might not be full of masala, but it surely touches a chord and might make you question your own identity 🙂
Undeniably, a must watch for everyone.
