Who doesn’t like to get all touristy and check everything as an experience while traveling ?
Anyhow, being a North Indian, I have grown up seeing food being served in pattals (plates made with sal or banyan tree leaves), hence the tradition of food on banana leaf in Kerala doesn’t surprise me but makes me happy that some dying traditions are still being held on to, but why banana leaf ?
The cook of a small street local place in Kerala said
1. it’s because the leaf is huge to accommodate lots of food,
2. it’s waterproof hence good for so many liquid dishes in South India,
and it’s so much more hygienic and biodegradable than the plastic and other kinds of plates !
But one thing which he did not say was how the taste of the leaf added to the already scrumptious food and yes, it was an experience to check 🙂
